No 08 Mooring to Roots

08 Mooring to roots WINNER.
Excellent fun shot. Hope there weren't any ants! Its almost surreal spontaneity
reminds me of a Lartigue. Love the lighting, which is what 'makes' the shot:
without the shadows it wouldn't be half as good. Like the way the composition is
mainly made up of vertical (trees, rail standards, lines) and horizontals
(person, shadows).
COMMENDED; 02 Together like this and 23 Locking at Bosley

02 Together like this - COMMENDED
Like this. Group photos can so often be just 'happy snaps' but this one has that
bit extra. Composition good: no-one looking at camera, three wearing dark
clothes and one light gives centre of interest, also he's against plain water
rather than boats. Better if left hand person had been looking more into group.
Chrome nav light on left possibly slightly distracting - maybe crop between this
and chimney - or just leave as is!?

23 Locking CF Bosley - COMMENDED
Very nice shot, and excellent composition. Picture tells a story. Gate paddle
upright on left and grass on right both hold picture in. Pity it's
under-exposed. This can easily happen (the white balance beam end probably threw
the metering as much as anything) but can just as easily be adjusted in the most
basic photo manipulation programme.
05Fun AM Sharing a joke

Like way people stand out of dark background. Nice tight shot. Good composition.
Helped by same colour fleece and bow; and arm on right vertical. Maybe better
if not obviously aware of camera!
01 Doing this

You could patent this if tripods and camera stands hadn't already been invented!
Fun! Good simple composition and pontoons on left show it's boaty.
03 The fun of boating

Idea good but sky/treeline too dominant, draws attention away from boat. Could
manipulate this in an editing program to give 'storm' clouds and slightly
lighter boat.
04 Fun At the Helm

If it hadn't said "at the helm" would I have known? Though tiller pin is just
peeping in! Composition quite 'wrong': pic split in two, background lighter than
subject but it works! Probably helped by orange life jacket. All in all I like
the shot.
06 Fun PM Dutch Fun

A hot summer day! Like the unusual low angle. Boat vertical and horizon sloping
doesn't bother me.
07 Fun AM A summer day out

What a crowded waterway! Helmsman doesn't look that happy, or is it just deep
concentration. The high angle works well. Note how having the tops of the trees
helps.
09 He was only
mending the cooker

We've all been there if not literally! Nice 'grab' shot.
21 Locking RC Torksey

Good crop with no sky showing above bridge helps concentrate attention in
middle. Would have liked more detail in shadows, and a bit more 'interest' in
the centre!
22 Locking CF Horus

Lovely blossom. Nice composition: boat on thirds, line leading in from bottom
left corner. Don't think the sloping verticals (camera not straight) help here.
Would have liked to have seen to the end of the balance beam on right, or crop
off a fraction so the white end doesn't show. Step to left to miss fencing? Nice
to have foreground interest but this a bit bright and distracting!
24 Locking AM Foncerannes

An interesting picture. Looks to be a distinct lack of water in the nearest
lock! Bet you had to hang on when the surge came, or looking at the nonchalant
crew maybe not! Person in yellow helps lead your attention to the 'action'.
Think I would prefer it cropped on the left just to left of the two bollards,
and on the right to the right of the bollard at the bottom of the steps.
25 peaceful at Crick, M5 behind

Balanced 'frame': angle of beam and branch same. M5 probably aurally more
dominant than visually! Can't really connect with either topic
